North Laos

I took a whole package to cross the border from ChiangRai (Thailand) to Huay Xai (Laos), all transports included and the slow boat, it was a bit expensive but very easy and convenient for crossing the border.
At the north from Huay Xai, I took the slow boat to Luang Prabang throught the Mekon river and stopped in Pak Beng.
The experience was nice and the landscape,  it it was a bit long, 2 days on the boat, people spend most of their time reading.
Tips: bring your own food/drinks and book your stay at Pak Beng when you arrive, it is much cheaper.
At Pak Beng, the Indian Restaurants are very good.

Other recommendations in the north:
I have heard very good things about Gibbon experience and jungle trekking at Luang Namtha.

Once in Luan Prabang, there are lots of hostels, you can use Booking.com

Things to do
Visit KuanSi waterfalls (better to go early in the morning) Walk to the top of the waterfall and if you continue walking few km you will find a very nice area to relax next to the cave. We had lunch there, swim and relax.  Highly recommended!
Do yoga in the morning  @ Utopia
See the sunset @ Pho Si temple
Walk around the town next to the coast line and walk on the bamboo bridge.

Places to eat/drinks
Night market: Eat Laos Khaosoi (local food)
Bouang: if you like stew, try the cinnamon stew! I loved it!
Utopia: for breakfast, lunch, dinner...and DRINKS!
Zurich: best bakery! And proper bread!!!

Nong Khiaw
We went by van and it took us half day, roads are really bad!
There are no much hostels in the area and not many things in Booking.com
So you can look for accommodation once you arrive.
Bungalows and double bedrooms are available.

Things to do
Climb view point, it takes 45 min approximately to go up to enjoy 360 view, sunset can be a great option.
Several days trekking including jungle trekking, homestay, hike and swim in waterfalls and kayaking, I did it with NK adventure and our guide was terrible, we still enjoyed the adventure but make sure your guide is not Mig!

Places to eat
Noymany Restaurant: eat whatever whenever, everything was delicious!
Alex Restaurant: eat burger, pizza, pasta...everything was good!

Muang Ngoy
You get a boat to get to the little village and same as Nong Khiaw, get a bungalow when you arrive, you can get a bungalow with river view for 5$.

Things to do
Climb Phaboom highest view point , it takes 1,5h to go up, very steep!
I did it for sunset and it was an amazing experience but not nice to go donw 1,5h in the dark!
Hike to Tad Mook waterfalls
Hike to traditional villages

Places to eat: I had breakfast and dinner in the buffet and the food was very tasty, lots of people say they got sick...I didn’t....

I continued my way to Vietnam taking a boat to Muang Khua and the a bus to the border.

Itinerary:
2 days slow boat
2 days Luang Prabang
1 day Nong khiaw
3 days trekking fron Nong Khiaw
1 day Nong khiaw
2 days Muang Ngoy
1 day Muang Khua

Hope this helps   :)
